The Royal Navy said Russian naval activity around the UK and in the North Atlantic increased by 25% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, leading to a rise in British naval surveillance operations.
The navy said British warships and aircraft spent 21 days monitoring Russian warships and submarines in July alone, also a 25% increase compared with July 2025.
The increase comes as Russian warships continue escorting tankers linked to Russia’s shadow fleet through waters monitored by the UK, adding to the Royal Navy’s operational workload.
The latest figures were released weeks after British authorities interdicted the sanctioned shadow fleet tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel in June.
According to the Royal Navy, Russian frigate RFN Neustrashimy repeatedly sailed through the UK’s area of responsibility while escorting shadow fleet tankers along recognised shipping routes.
British warships HMS Somerset, HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey and HMS Severn, along with Wildcat helicopters from 815 Naval Air Squadron and Merlin anti-submarine warfare aircraft, were involved in monitoring Russian naval movements throughout July.
The UK has already sanctioned more than 500 vessels as part of its campaign against Russia’s shadow fleet. The Royal Navy said Russia’s oil and gas revenues fell by 24% year-on-year in 2025.
“By disrupting the shadow fleet, the UK and international partners are directly bearing down on the resources sustaining Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and reducing its capacity to threaten security across Europe and beyond,” the Royal Navy said.
On July 20, HMS Tyne was monitoring Neustrashimy when the Russian frigate carried out gunnery exercises outside British and French territorial waters.
The British patrol vessel moved to within five nautical miles of the Russian warship and continued collecting intelligence during the exercise.
The Royal Navy said Tyne observed around 20 shots fired from Neustrashimy’s main 100mm gun and its 30mm battery.
“Through sustained presence and close cooperation with allies, HMS Tyne was ideally suited to this task, providing reassurance and monitoring while enabling other fleet units to continue their operational commitments,” said Lieutenant Commander Sam Fields, commanding officer of HMS Tyne.

French naval forces were also tracking Neustrashimy. In an operational update covering July 30 to Aug. 6, the French Armed Forces said one of its offshore patrol vessels was monitoring the Russian frigate in the North Sea as part of wider surveillance operations.
HMS Somerset’s July mission formed part of its four-month deployment to monitor surface and underwater activity in the North Atlantic.
The Type 23 frigate, operating with an embarked Merlin anti-submarine warfare helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron, returned to Plymouth on Aug. 7 after sailing more than 26,500 nautical miles.
“I am immensely proud of every single member of the ship’s company for what we have achieved over the past four months,” Commander Matt Millyard, Somerset’s commanding officer, said in a Royal Navy statement.
HMS Severn was activated twice in July to monitor Russian naval movements.
The patrol vessel first shadowed Russian frigate RFN Admiral Grigorovich as it sailed from the French island of Ushant towards Dover.
The BBC reported that Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots from small arms toward a British civilian yacht on July 14. Russia’s Defence Ministry said the yacht had approached the warship in a dangerous manner.
Later, between July 23 and July 26, HMS Severn was deployed to intercept and shadow Neustrashimy after taking over monitoring duties from HMS Mersey in the North Sea.
Neustrashimy was escorting shadow fleet tanker MV Vulkan from the Baltic Sea through the Dover Strait toward Ushant.
After completing the escort mission, Neustrashimy headed west toward Dover while Severn and Mersey continued alternating their monitoring duties.
