India’s Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has delivered INS Mangrol, the third of eight indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs), to the Indian Navy.

The vessel was handed over at CSL’s Kochi facility on Friday. The delivery protocol was signed by CSL Director (Operations) Harikrishnan S. and Commander U. Sharan Kumar, the Commanding Officer (Designate) of INS Mangrol, in the presence of senior officials from the shipyard and the Navy.

Mangrol is designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare in shallow coastal waters and is equipped to conduct underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations and Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO). It also has mine-laying capabilities.

The vessel is fitted with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous anti-submarine warfare rockets and advanced shallow-water sonars. It also has modern radar and other systems to help detect and track underwater threats in coastal waters.

The warship is powered by a diesel engine-waterjet propulsion system and was designed and constructed in accordance with the classification rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

More than 80% indigenous content

The Indian Navy said Mangrol has more than 80% indigenous content. The vessel was indigenously designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard.

The Navy said the ship is equipped with sonars and radars, advanced torpedoes, ASW rockets and mines. These systems allow it to perform underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, mine warfare and Low Intensity Maritime Operations.

Mangrol is the third of eight ASW shallow water crafts being built for the Indian Navy.

Named after Gujarat coastal town

INS Mangrol derives its name from the coastal township of Mangrol in Gujarat. The Navy said the new vessel carries forward the name of the former minesweeper INS Mangrol, which was decommissioned in 2004.

The delivery of Mangrol is the third under the Indian Navy’s programme for eight ASW shallow water crafts. The vessels are designed for operations in coastal waters, where shallow depths require specialised systems for detecting and tracking submarines.

The ship’s additional capabilities include search and rescue operations, low-intensity maritime operations and mine laying.
