Although it is not clear who was behind the attack, Nicușor Dan, the President of Romania, said that it is most likely Russia. The tanker, sailing under the flag of Liberia, was hit outside Romanian waters, around 20 nautical miles off the coast of Romania.

The ship was loaded with over 3790 tonnes of propane and was coming from Egypt’s Port of Alexandria. After the attack, the ship was in flames, and the 17 crew members had to evacuate quickly.

Two Romanian rescue ships arrived at the site to assist the distressed seafarers, including three who were critically injured, with burns covering 10% to 15% of their bodies, one of the members of the rescue team said.

One of the injured crew members was also bleeding profusely, and his situation was critical when he was rescued, according to sources.

The Black Sea has seen several ship attacks in the last few months, becoming the place of confrontation between Russia and Ukraine since the former launched an invasion of Kyiv in 2022.

India also summoned a top Russian Envoy to the capital, New Delhi, after strongly condemning the attack on a commercial cargo vessel in the Ukrainian Port of Odesa, which killed 4 Indian Seafarers.
