The U.S carried out strikes on Iran’s southeastern port city of Chabahar on Thursday, targeting maritime infrastructure and military facilities.
The incident has increased tensions between the U.S and Iran, making it clear that the interim peace agreement no longer remains valid, with Trump announcing that the deal with Iran is ‘over’ and saying that the Islamic Republic must prepare for more attacks.
According to sources, the U.S forces struck piers, a maritime traffic control tower and military assets but did not target civilian port facilities and energy infrastructure.
Fire was reported from some areas at the port and explosions were heard across the port city, with local media reporting panic among the civilians and power outages in most parts of the city.
Emergency teams were deployed to the affected areas, according to Iranian news outlets. Residents were advised to hide in safe places until further notice.
This is the first attack on the port since the ceasefire came into effect.
US Central Command (CENTCOM), said that the operation focussed on the military facilities which Washington alleged were being used to threaten commercial ships in Hormuz.
CENTCOM said around 90 Iranian targets were struck in the latest attacks.
“US Central Command forces have started conducting additional strikes against Iran to further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.
It also mentioned that Washington is holding Iran accountable for its unjust aggression against commercial ships and civilian crews navigating the Strait of Hormuz.
