The U.S will get an advanced shipyard named Port Alpha, which will be built at Brownsville, Texas, per reports.
The facility will boost U.S maritime dominance and manufacture autonomous and software-defined ships measuring up to 850 feet. After expansion, it will be able to support ships over 1200 feet.
The planned $3 billion facility will become one of the most advanced software-defined shipyards in the world.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that this was a historic milestone and will create atleast 10,000 high-paying jobs and deliver around $750 million in annual paychecks.
Over the next decade, Port Alpha is expected to generate massive financial dividends: $160 billion in regional economic impact for Cameron County and $264.5 billion in total economic impact for the State of Texas.
Autonomous naval technology company Saronic chose Brownsville, Texas, as the site for Port Alpha after a one-year-long nationwide search for the perfect location.
Finally, it chose the 853-acre site at the Port of Brownsville due to its deepwater channel connectivity and expansion potential of up to 4400 acres.
Construction work will begin in 2026, with operations launching in 2028.
The massive private capital investment aligns with recent federal mandates, including the Executive Order on Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance, the SHIPS for America Act, and the Maritime Action Plan.
These initiatives aim to rebuild the domestic industrial base and close the widening shipbuilding gap with foreign adversaries.
“Port Alpha is designed to deliver ships at a speed and scale not seen since World War II,” said Dino Mavrookas, Co-Founder and CEO of Saronic.
The company plans to partner with Texas universities and local technical colleges to train workers in robotics, software engineering, and naval architecture.
The Texas mega-project builds upon Saronic’s expanding Gulf Coast footprint.
In 2025, the company invested $300 million to acquire and expand a shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana, which builds its Marauder autonomous vessels.
