A fire broke out on a cargo ship laden with ore, docked at the Romanian Port of Midia, north of Constanta, on August 21, 2026.
According to sources, ISU Constanța sent 5 fire engines, specialised CBRN units and ladder trucks along with medical teams to the site of the accident.
However, by the time the firefighters arrived, the blaze had spread considerably and engulfed the ship’s stern, which was almost entirely burnt.
The team quickly got to work, trying to prevent the fire from reaching the cargo hold or the fuel tanks, which could lead to a massive explosion.
Authorities said that the crew members were safely rescued and nobody was injured. The teams were successful in containing and then extinguishing the fire. It has also been confirmed that there was no fuel leak or pollution at the port from the vessel.
The emergency at the Midia Port follows a critical escalation in the region, which has witnessed several attacks in the last few days.
On August 20, 2026, two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets intercepted and destroyed a maritime surface drone carrying explosives within Romania’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The drone was found 80 nautical miles east of Constanta close to the Neptun Alpha offshore gas platform. An F-16 neutralised it using the 20 mm onboard cannon, making it the first live-fire engagement against a drone in Romania’s military history.
Bucharest took operational control from NATO to authorise the immediate attack, for the safety of personnel on the OMV Petrom and Romgaz Platform.
After Ukraine confirmed that the drone was not fired by its forces, Romanian President Nicușor Dan publicly condemned the incident, blaming Russia for targeting European energy infrastructure.
Another attack was carried out on August 16, 2026, at the Greek-managed crude tanker Skiros off the Russian Port of Novorossiysk. The Suezmax vessel was struck by a suspected Ukrainian drone after it loaded Russian crude at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal.
Though the vessel reported damage, the crew members were reported to be safe, and there were no oil spills or pollution caused by the incident.
