Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone’s (APSEZ) flagship Mundra Port handled 21,085 TEUs on the MSC AMBRA, the highest container volume handled on a single ship at an Indian Port.This has broken the previous Indian container handling record by a large margin. The last record stood at 16,569 TEUs, achieved by the MSC Livorno in January 2024.
Through this achievement, Mundra Port has secured its position as India’s biggest and one of the most capable commercial ports.
According to experts, this is also an indicator of India’s growing capacity to facilitate global trade, since handling over 21,000 TEUs in a single call requires a lot of coordination, management and excellent infrastructural facilities, along with a swift evacuation system so that thousands of containers can be processed smoothly without congesting the port premises or affecting other operations at the port.
The MSC Ambra is an Ultra-Large Container Vessel (ULCV) and is among the largest cargo ships in the world.
It is around 400 metres long and is equal to the length of 4 football fields. The behemoth is 61.5 m wide, and accommodating such a massive ship is not an easy task.
Because of its colossal displacement, weight, and cargo load, the MSC Ambra requires a deep draft of more than 15 meters to berth safely.
Mundra Port is one of the few facilities in India that offer such deep drafts and advanced infrastructure with high-capacity cranes to dock and turn around a ship of this size.
With this milestone, Adani’s Mundra Port has made it clear that it is equipped to serve as a premier hub in the international maritime supply chains.
