The United States has awarded the Presidential Unit Citation to the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group after its involvement in combat operations linked to the war with Iran and a 326-day deployment across multiple global regions.
The award was presented by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during the strike group’s return to Naval Station Norfolk, where thousands of sailors reunited with families after nearly 11 months at sea.
According to the official citation signed by Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Carrier Strike Group 12 was recognised for “outstanding performance in action against enemy forces” between February 28 and May 1 under Operation Epic Fury, the US-led campaign targeting Iranian military assets.

The citation says the group took part in sustained combat against Iranian forces, including coordination of strikes on 125 Iranian warships and directing 207 Tomahawk missile launches from nine surface ships.
It also confirms more than 1,700 combat air sorties were flown, targeting around 700 enemy sites, while the force operated under missile and drone threats.
The strike group included the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford along with destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill, USS Bainbridge and USS Mahan. It also operated with Carrier Air Wing Eight and Destroyer Squadron Two.

US officials said the group carried out operations across several regions, including the Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean, and Middle East.
It was first deployed in June 2025 for operations in Europe before being redirected to the Caribbean for missions linked to Venezuela. It was later sent to the Middle East after fighting began with Iran.
In the Caribbean, the group supported US operations including Task Force Southern Spear.
Later, it was involved in operations tied to Venezuela, including the reported capture of Nicolás Maduro during Operation Absolute Resolve, before moving to the Middle East.
The strike group later took part in Operation Epic Fury during the early phase of the Iran conflict, alongside other US carrier groups including the USS Abraham Lincoln and later the USS George H. W. Bush.

The citation also states that the group helped protect key sea lanes while operating under missile and drone attacks, especially in regions linked to the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
The deployment lasted 326 days, making it one of the longest US carrier deployments in modern history. Only the USS Nimitz had a longer recent deployment during the COVID-19 period.
During the deployment, the ship also faced technical issues, including plumbing failures and a fire in March in a laundry area that injured sailors and forced repairs while docked in Crete, Greece.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle said the deployment was longer than expected, noting it was originally planned as a much shorter mission.
Around 5,000 sailors returned home after the deployment, reuniting with families in Norfolk.
