A tug was run aground off Zambales, a province in the Philippines, by the authorities; however, the decision backfired as it sank on August 24, 2026, raising concerns about a potential oil spill and fears of contamination in surrounding waters.
The incident occurred when the tug SL Sual 1 was being towed to a different location, from where it had been run aground off the Botolan municipality.
Rough weather and powerful waves made it list dangerously to its starboard side in the early hours of Monday. At that time, there were ten personnel on the vessel who then jumped into the waters and were eventually saved.
The workers involved in the tug’s salvage later said that a loud banging noise was heard before the incident occurred; however, the cause or origin of the sound remains unknown.
After some time, the waves consumed the tug, which then settled to a depth of 24 m. The Philippine Coast Guard is monitoring the situation and has also set up containment booms around the sunken tug, since it was laden with 15,000 litres of diesel.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the tug was anchored off Boton when crew members found water in the engine room due to a breach in its hull.
After the discovery on August 14, 2026, it was decided that SL Sual 1 must be grounded to prevent more damage to the hull or reduce the risk of its sinking.
Though the weather worsened, all 9 of the crew members were rescued from the stranded tug by coast guard personnel and also local fishermen.
