Intensifying concurrent marine–atmospheric heatwaves (CHWs) across the Arabian Peninsula's marginal seas pose a significant and escalating threat to coral reefs and ocean productivity. A recent study, analyzing data from 1982–2021, reveals a marked increase in the frequency and duration of these events, extending both marine and atmospheric heatwaves. Findings indicate that CHWs are the primary drivers of coral bleaching—accounting for nearly 70-80% of severe events—and trigger substantial declines in chlorophyll-a concentrations.
