A team of maritime historians has identified the surviving remains of the grand piano carried aboard RMS Titanic, more than a century after the instrument disappeared beneath the North Atlantic.
The identification was announced through a two-part documentary produced by The Steam & Splendor Network, in collaboration with HFX Studios and members of the historical team behind the book On a Sea of Glass: The Life & Loss of the RMS Titanic.
The object appears in only a few seconds of raw remotely operated vehicle footage in the collection of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association collection, recorded in the debris field near Titanic’s bow in 2003.
Although the wooden cabinet has largely disappeared, the piano’s heavy cast-iron plate—sometimes called the “harp”—remains recognizable on the seabed.
Maritime historian, author and piano technician J. Kent Layton recognized the object while reviewing the footage. The shape and design corresponds with the plate used in a Steinway Model B grand piano. Titanic carried only one grand piano: the Model B installed in the First Class Reception Room.
“This was not an upright piano plate,” Layton said. “The distinctive curve around the tail and the arrangement of the structural braces immediately identified it as a grand. When the surviving details were compared with Steinway Model B plans and period examples, it was clear what we were looking at.”
According to surviving records, the instrument was Steinway Model B serial number 146272, manufactured at Steinway’s Hamburg factory and specially decorated with an art case to harmonize with the Reception Room’s interior.
It was played during Titanic’s maiden voyage by members of the ship’s celebrated orchestra, including bandleader Wallace Hartley.
Passengers gathered in the room for afternoon and evening performances, and contemporary accounts mention selections from The Tales of Hoffmann and Cavalleria Rusticana.

Found Outside the Ship
The identification challenges the widely repeated suggestion that the grand piano remains inside the wrecked remains of the Reception Room. The cast-iron plate is instead lying upright in the debris field, a short distance south of the aft end of the bow section.
“Even after more than a century, we are still learning new things about Titanic. Each new discovery helps us piece together a more accurate picture of the sinking. This finding can help guide future expeditions,” Layton said.
Clues to Titanic’s Final Descent
The piano’s location may also contribute to the continuing study of how Titanic’s bow descended after the ship broke apart.
Because the instrument came to rest relatively close behind the bow—rather than near the central debris-field “hypocenter”—the team believes it probably remained within the bow section for much of the descent.
It may have passed from the Reception Room into the adjoining First Class Dining Saloon and escaped through the open breakup area at the Saloon’s aft end.
The team compared the piano’s resting place with other identifiable objects ejected from the bow, including the D Deck candelabra, a section of Watertight Bulkhead K, the statue of Diana from the First Class Lounge, tangled lifeboat davits and a box of unused signal rockets.
Together, these objects may help establish a sequence in which material left the ship during its descent and impact. The researchers caution that this broader reconstruction remains under study.
Part Two: How Did Titanic’s Grand Piano Reach the Wreck Site?
A Call for Future Documentation
The surviving footage is too limited to document the plate in the detail the discovery deserves. The team is therefore inviting future expeditions to return to the estimated location and obtain high-resolution imagery of the piano remains.
“For more than a century, this instrument has been part of the human story of Titanic,” Layton said. “It entertained passengers during the maiden voyage and was played by musicians whose courage became legendary. We now know that its remains are still there. The next step is to return, document it properly and preserve its story for future generations.”
