The resilience of coastal communities reliant on artisanal fisheries is increasingly challenged by the converging forces of environmental change and socioeconomic pressures. A recent study examining twelve fishing communities along the Colombian Caribbean coastline highlights this vulnerability, demonstrating the complex interplay between ecological factors and human well-being. This research echoes concerns raised in other regions, such as the ongoing environmental consequences of the What is the Gulf of Mexico like today given the oil spill that occurred 16 years ago? How much has it recovered, what has changed, how does the water quality today compare to before the spill?, illustrating the long-term impacts of environmental disruption on fishing livelihoods. Furthermore, the challenges faced by these Colombian communities are not unique; similar issues concerning responsible maritime practices and environmental oversight are apparent globally, as evidenced by the recent NGO Warns EU Approval Of Indian Shipbreaking Yards Could Create ‘Chilling Double Standard’, underscoring the need for stringent regulatory frameworks and sustainable practices across maritime industries. The development of a Socioeconomic Vulnerability Index (SEVI) incorporating economic resources, human capital, and livelihood sensitivity provides a valuable tool for assessing and comparing the relative vulnerability of these communities, revealing significant spatial disparities within the study area.

The study’s findings underscore the multidimensional nature of socioeconomic vulnerability. While fishing dependence was assessed, it didn’t directly correlate with overall SEVI rankings, emphasizing that factors like education level – a component of human capital – play a crucial role. This highlights the importance of holistic approaches to fisheries management that consider not only ecological sustainability but also the broader socioeconomic context of fishing-dependent communities. The identified pressures – overexploitation, pollution, fishing pressure, climate variability, and institutional limitations – are consistent with global trends impacting small-scale fisheries, and their perception by fishers provides vital local ecological knowledge that complements scientific data. The lexical analysis of fisher perceptions offers a nuanced understanding of the challenges they face, going beyond quantitative metrics to capture the lived experience of those most directly affected. The sensitivity analysis, demonstrating the influence of weighting assumptions, is a crucial methodological point, acknowledging the inherent uncertainties in vulnerability assessments and the need for transparent and adaptable frameworks.

The integration of socioeconomic indicators with local ecological knowledge represents a significant step towards developing place-based, adaptive fisheries governance. This approach aligns with the growing recognition that effective conservation requires collaboration and the incorporation of diverse perspectives. The study’s methodology provides a practical framework that can be applied in other data-poor coastal social-ecological systems, offering a pathway to more equitable and sustainable fisheries management. The focus on empirical data, validated through structured interviews and analyzed using robust statistical techniques, strengthens the credibility of the findings and reinforces the importance of rigorous scientific assessment in informing policy decisions. The research serves as a compelling example of how integrated data ecosystems, a core tenet of our work, can be leveraged to improve ocean intelligence and inform effective resource management strategies.

Looking ahead, a critical question emerges: how can the insights from this study be translated into tangible policy interventions that empower vulnerable fishing communities and enhance their adaptive capacity? Further research should explore the effectiveness of different governance strategies in mitigating socioeconomic vulnerability and promoting sustainable livelihoods. The increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related events will undoubtedly exacerbate these challenges, requiring a proactive and collaborative approach to ensure the long-term resilience of artisanal fisheries and the communities that depend on them. Continued monitoring of climate indicators and integrated data analysis will be vital to anticipate future risks and inform adaptive management practices.

Small-scale fisheries are complex social–ecological systems in which environmental change interacts with socioeconomic constraints, shaping the vulnerability of fishing-dependent communities. This study assessed socioeconomic vulnerability and fishers’ perceptions across 12 artisanal fishing communities along the marine–coastal margin of the Magdalena Department, Colombian Caribbean. Socioeconomic information and local ecological knowledge were obtained through structured interviews with 246 active fishers. A Socioeconomic Vulnerability Index (SEVI) was developed using three complementary indicators representing economic resources, human capital, and livelihood sensitivity: total income, education level, and fishing dependence. Fishers’ perceptions of environmental and governance pressures were analyzed using lexical analysis and Descending Hierarchical Classification. The SEVI revealed marked spatial differences in relative socioeconomic vulnerability, with community mean values ranging from 0.549 to 0.776. Tasajera, Don Diego, La Poza, Salguero Beach, and Achotes showed high relative vulnerability, whereas the remaining communities showed moderate vulnerability. Fishing dependence ranged from 0.425 to 0.669 but did not correspond directly to overall SEVI rankings, emphasizing the multidimensional nature of socioeconomic vulnerability. Sensitivity analysis showed that community rankings were insensitive to normalization procedure but more responsive to weighting assumptions. Leave-one-out analysis further indicated that community rankings were particularly sensitive to the inclusion of education, highlighting the distinctive contribution of human capital to differences among communities. Fishers identified overexploitation, pollution, fishing pressure, climate variability, and institutional limitations as major perceived challenges affecting artisanal fisheries. Integrating socioeconomic indicators with local ecological knowledge provides a practical framework for identifying relative vulnerability patterns and supporting place-based, adaptive fisheries governance in data-poor coastal social–ecological systems.
