Six young men were disembarked from cruise ship MSC Divina after they got unauthorised access to the onboard intercom system and announced fake warnings, causing panic and confusion among the passengers.
MSC Divina was sailing from Marmaris, Turkey, to Naples on 29-30 July 2026 when the incident happened. The men announced that the captain had lost control of the vessel and it was now adrift.
Though the announcement reached the public areas of just two decks, a few passengers who heard it reported the news to the Operations Center of the General Command of the Port Authority of Rome, a division of the Italian Coast Guard.
After the announcement, Captain Gabriele Russo addressed passengers over the public address system and explained that the recent announcement was false and was made by young men on the ship.
Taking help from the Border Police of Naples, authorities intervened when the ship berthed in the city. The captain also lodged a complaint against the men after which officers boarded the cruise ship and traced them.
They were then disembarked from the vessel and handed over to authorities on charges of gaining unauthorised access to the ship’s computer system and causing an alarm, as per the reports.
An MSC Cruises spokesperson confirmed the incident; however, he added that the ship’s systems were not hacked or compromised at any time, saying that the safe operation of the vessel was not affected in any way.
The incident was “immediately resolved and changes put in place to ensure it won’t happen again,” the MSC spokesperson concluded.
