Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has handled India’s largest-ever single vessel shipment of edible oil after successfully discharging 66,800 metric tonnes (MT) of Degummed Soybean Oil (DSBO) from the vessel MT Bangus at Mundra Port.
The cargo arrived from San Lorenzo, Argentina, one of the world’s major agricultural export hubs. According to APSEZ, it is the largest single parcel of edible oil ever handled by a vessel at an Indian port, setting a new record for the country’s liquid bulk cargo sector.
The operation comes as India, one of the world’s largest importers of edible oils, continues to depend on overseas supplies for refining and domestic consumption.
APSEZ said handling a shipment of this size is expected to improve supply chain efficiency, optimise vessel operations and help reduce logistics costs.
MT Bangus is 229 metres long and has a displacement of 88,830 MT. The company said discharging the cargo required careful planning and close coordination between its marine, operations, safety, engineering and support teams, along with the vessel’s crew and other stakeholders.
The cargo was discharged using Mundra Port’s liquid bulk infrastructure while following established operational and safety procedures.
Degummed Soybean Oil is imported into India for refining before being supplied for household use and the food processing industry. Efficient handling of large edible oil shipments is important for ensuring steady supplies to the domestic market.
Mundra Port has dedicated liquid cargo terminals, storage tank facilities, specialised pipelines and cargo handling systems that allow it to handle a range of liquid bulk commodities, including edible oils, crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals and other bulk liquids.
