China has publicly confirmed for the first time that its YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile can be launched from a Type 052D guided-missile destroyer, expanding the long-range strike capability of one of the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) most widely deployed warship classes.

Footage released by China Central Television (CCTV) on July 30 showed the missile being launched from the vertical launch system of a Type 052D destroyer. Until now, the YJ-20 had only been officially linked to the larger Type 055 destroyer.

The footage does not show whether the missile has been deployed across the entire Type 052D fleet or how many ships have been equipped with it.

However, it confirms that at least one of the PLAN’s most numerous modern destroyer classes can carry the weapon, potentially extending the capability to a much larger number of Chinese surface warships.

The video appeared in a trailer for the documentary series Achieve Victory (“Zhìshèng”), released ahead of the People’s Liberation Army’s 99th anniversary on August 1.

China first displayed the YJ-20 during its Victory Day Parade on September 3, 2025, while a launch test from the Type 055 destroyer Wuxi in December 2025 confirmed the missile’s integration with that class.

The latest footage is the first official confirmation that the missile can also be launched from a Type 052D.

The Type 052D is one of the PLAN’s main air-defence destroyers, displacing about 7,500 to 7,700 tonnes. The larger Type 055 carries 112 universal vertical launch cells.

China has commissioned about 35 Type 052D destroyers and around 10 Type 055 destroyers, creating a potential compatibility base of more than 40 major surface combatants.

The footage shows the missile being ejected from a forward vertical launch cell before its booster ignites, indicating a cold-launch method that is compatible with China’s universal vertical launch system.

Because the missile fits inside the ship’s existing launch cells, destroyers carrying it would not need external launchers, making it more difficult for other navies to identify which ships are armed with the weapon.

The YJ-20 is estimated to be about 8.43 to 9 metres long with a diameter of less than 850 millimetres. Analysts estimate it can travel at speeds above Mach 6 during mid-course flight and may approach Mach 10 in its terminal phase, although China has not released official performance data. Its estimated range is between 1,000 and 1,500 kilometres, with some assessments placing it at up to 2,000 kilometres.

According to analysts, the missile’s reported biconic aerodynamic design and steep terminal dive are intended to allow manoeuvring during re-entry, making interception more difficult by reducing the time available for missile defence systems to respond.

For the United States and its allies, the significance lies not only in the missile itself but also in the number of ships that could potentially carry it. If integrated more widely across the Type 052D fleet, the YJ-20 would increase the number of mobile launch platforms that could operate alongside China’s land-based DF-21D and DF-26 anti-ship ballistic missiles, submarines, aircraft and other YJ-series missiles.

Unlike land-based missile systems, destroyers can move under the protection of a naval task group, reposition across contested waters and approach targets from different directions, making launch locations less predictable.

China’s anti-access and area-denial strategy already combines land-based anti-ship ballistic missiles with submarines, aircraft, drones, satellites, over-the-horizon sensors and the BeiDou navigation system.

Equipping Type 052D destroyers with the YJ-20 would extend part of that strike capability to sea, allowing launch platforms to operate closer to potential carrier operating areas in the East China Sea, South China Sea, Philippine Sea and waters around Taiwan.

The missile’s effectiveness, however, depends on China’s reconnaissance and targeting network. Engaging a moving aircraft carrier would require accurate target detection, continuous tracking, secure communications and timely targeting updates.

Satellites, aircraft, drones, submarines and over-the-horizon radar would all contribute to that sensor-to-shooter chain, while electronic warfare, cyber operations, decoys and attacks on surveillance assets could disrupt it.

The integration also presents operational trade-offs. Every YJ-20 loaded into a universal vertical launch cell occupies space that could otherwise be used for long-range surface-to-air missiles, anti-submarine weapons or other munitions, requiring commanders to balance offensive strike capability with fleet air-defence needs.
