New research reveals a “thermal gap constraint”: as sea surface temperatures exceed approximately 28.5°C, anomaly accumulation compresses, hindering DHW’s ability to trigger critical alert thresholds. Analysis of extensive datasets demonstrates that metric architecture, rather than data source, is the primary driver of predictive skill. An absolute-temperature metric substantially improved performance, highlighting the need for refined approaches.
