Evaluation of challenges to marine plastic waste management with an integrated multiple-criteria decision-making approach

Marine plastic pollution represents a critical global environmental threat, demanding robust and validated management strategies. This study utilizes an integrated, multi-criteria decision-making framework—employing Fermatean Fuzzy Sets, Analytic Hierarchy Process, and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory—to assess key challenges impeding effective waste management. Our analysis, informed by expert consensus and a comprehensive literature review, identifies deficiencies in real-time data, social awareness, coastal planning, scientific guidance, and enforcement as primary obstacles.

Bridging the microplastic awareness gap: community awareness, risk perception, and policy support for mitigating plastic pollution in Eastern Black Sea catchments

Effective plastic pollution mitigation requires a clear understanding of community awareness, risk perception, and policy support. This study, analyzing data from 151 respondents across Eastern Black Sea catchment communities, reveals a significant knowledge-concern asymmetry: while plastic waste awareness is moderate, microplastic awareness remains lower despite high risk perception and strong policy endorsement. Notably, increased microplastic awareness correlates positively with broader plastic waste awareness, highlighting a critical area for targeted communication strategies.
