New data reveals what drives nitrogen fixation in Sargassum communities

Nitrogen fixation in Sargassum communities is driven by biology, not the surrounding seawater. Our new data show that rates of fixation correlate strongly with epiphytic cyanobacteria, specifically *Dichothrix* spp. and Oscillatoriales, while no measured physicochemical variable had a significant effect. This finding refines our understanding of the marine nitrogen cycle and challenges assumptions about what controls this process.
