Population genomics on octocorals in marginal environments: resilient but vulnerable refugia for corals under the Anthropocene
Octocorals, vital habitat formers in marine ecosystems, offer critical insights into species resilience amidst rapid environmental change. This study investigates the population genomics of three octocoral species—*Dendronephthya gigantea*, *D. spinifera*, and *Echinomuricea spinifera*—within the marginal environments of Hong Kong, influenced by freshwater influx. Findings reveal unexpectedly low genetic diversity and limited differentiation, suggesting adaptation to turbid conditions and potential vulnerability.

First evidence of live mesophotic coral reefs on the Benin continental shelf
Recent marine surveys off the coast of Benin have yielded the first confirmed visual evidence of living mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) within the Gulf of Guinea—a region previously presumed devoid of such habitats. Utilizing side-scan sonar and underwater video, researchers documented thriving octocoral communities at depths of 54 meters, forming a unique mesophotic coral garden. This discovery, spanning approximately 7 kilometers, significantly expands our understanding of West African marine biodiversity and underscores the urgent need for further exploration and baseline data collection.
