Effective marine protected area (MPA) networks demand precise knowledge of habitat distribution, a challenge in remote archipelagos where comprehensive surveys are often impractical. This study assesses coastal reef-fish habitat protection across the Azores archipelago using species distribution models (SDMs), integrating visual census data with seabed and oceanographic variables. Our random forest approach predicts habitat suitability, revealing that while current MPAs generally align with high-suitability areas, protection remains limited.

Evaluating the effectiveness of marine ecological red lines: an integrated assessment of ecological outcomes and governance performance
Marine Ecological Red Lines (MERLs) represent a significant spatial conservation policy, particularly in China, yet their effectiveness requires rigorous, quantitative evaluation. This study introduces an indicator-based assessment framework, grounded in the PSR model, to evaluate MERL performance by integrating anthropogenic pressures, ecosystem conditions, and management responses. Initial findings from Hainan Province demonstrate reduced pressures and improved ecological conditions within MERLs compared to adjacent areas.

Offshore wind presents a vital pathway to decarbonization and energy security for Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Addressing data fragmentation, this study establishes a reproducible spatial framework to assess wind potential while considering environmental constraints across 12 Caribbean EEZs. Mapping wind speeds and integrating foundation technologies, we identified 10.03% of the maritime domain as ‘Opportunity’ zones, with only 0.36% designated as ‘Trade-off’ areas.
