The Italian effort toward a coordinated observation of Essential Variables (EOV, ECV, EBV) in European Marine Environments. Long-term observation in the central Mediterranean seas and Italian coasts

Italy's coordinated effort to observe Essential Ocean, Climate, and Biodiversity Variables (EOVs, ECVs, EBVs) in the Mediterranean is pivotal for enhancing environmental assessments and policy development. This study analyzes the capabilities of Italy's marine monitoring system, involving fixed stations, buoys, and autonomous platforms, within the framework of the ITINERIS project. Findings reveal that 50% of the recognized 107 Essential Variables are actively monitored, with over 90% meeting international standards.

Centennial persistence of kelp forests on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Canada

This study examines the centennial persistence of kelp forests along the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, focusing on dynamic canopy-forming species such as bull kelp and giant kelp. Utilizing nearly 170 years of data, including historical British Admiralty charts and modern Sentinel-2 imagery, we analyze kelp distribution across four ecoregions. Our findings reveal that cooler, high-energy regions maintain a high persistence rate of approximately 88%, while warmer ecoregions show significantly lower persistence at 52%.
