Petroleum legacies linger in Liao River wetlands long after well retirement

Retired oil wells in the Liao River wetlands still hold a significant petroleum legacy, with total hydrocarbon concentrations averaging over ten times those of reference sites. That is a measurable, empirical reminder that retirement is not remediation. While active plots remain the most contaminated, these findings underscore the need for integrated monitoring of residual contamination and local metal enrichment.
