Sea level rise (SLR) poses a critical threat to coastal safety, demanding rigorous, longitudinal analysis. A recent study validates seventy years of sea level variations along the Zhejiang Coast of East China Sea, utilizing data from ten stations. Findings indicate a 2020 sea level 40.3 cm above the national datum, accelerating from a historical average of 0.25 cm/yr. Future projections, accounting for potential acceleration, forecast substantial increases by 2050 and 2100, aligning with high-emission climate scenarios.

Estuaries, critical transitional zones between freshwater and marine environments, are frequently studied as larger systems, leaving smaller micro-estuaries comparatively understudied. This research defines and investigates the abundance of Mediterranean micro-estuaries—vital coastal features facing increasing anthropogenic and climate-driven pressures. Utilizing a decade of hydrographic data and GIS analysis across seven East Mediterranean sites, we identified 243 micro-estuary-like systems, many previously undocumented.

Two parameter analytical framework for surface layer salinity assessment in highly stratified microtidal estuary

Seawater intrusion poses a significant threat to coastal resources, particularly within highly stratified microtidal estuaries where predictive tools are lacking. This study introduces a novel, two-parameter analytical framework for assessing surface layer salinity, calibrated and validated using extensive field data from the Neretva River estuary. Building on established models, this framework incorporates four key modifications, including a salinity indicator (kforc10) derived from observed seawater level. Demonstrating strong performance (R² = 0.83-0.94), this computationally efficient tool offers practical support for coastal management and informed decision-making.
