When rule breaking spreads, measurable social behavior can accelerate

Rule breaking is contagious. A new study shows people are more likely to mimic, or even exceed, the behavior of rule breakers than rule followers. This measurable social acceleration raises a critical question: what keeps the system intact? Real-world consequences, the research suggests, may act as the necessary counterweight. It is a calibrated reminder that social order relies on more than good intentions.
