A recent scoping review of 317 articles reveals a growing body of research examining these impacts and underlying mechanisms. Findings suggest tourism can either increase or decrease fishing pressure, depending on governance structures and livelihood shifts.
Status and trends of key prey species for the Mediterranean Monk Seal in the Eastern Adriatic Sea
The Mediterranean monk seal's sporadic reappearance in the eastern Adriatic raises critical questions regarding the region's capacity to support recolonization. A recent assessment, integrating MEDITS biomass indices, fishery-dependent data, and national landings, evaluated trends in key prey species. Utilizing a reliability-weighted traffic-light framework, analysis of 12 taxa revealed a heterogeneous prey base: 4 species showed improving trends, 6 were stable/inconsistent, and 2 declined. Findings highlight potential local constraints where declining resources intersect with coastal fisheries, underscoring the need for targeted monitoring.
