An Arleigh-Burke destroyer of the U.S Navy, the USS Gonzalez (DDG-66), left Naval Station Norfolk for its Atlantic deployment, where it will operate as a part of the U.S 2nd Fleet.

Gonzalez will support American and allied missions in the North Atlantic and Arctic while patrolling vital sea routes.

The deployment came after intensive training, trials, and maintenance rounds, according to Navy officials.

Captain John Benfield, commodore of Destroyer Squadron 22, stated in an official Navy press release that the ship and its crew are ready if tensions escalate in the region and they have the capabilities to fight at a moment’s notice.

It took a lot of training and effort to ensure the crew’s preparedness for this important deployment, added Commander Michael Schenk, commanding officer of the USS Gonzalez.

Gonzalelez is named after Marine Sergeant Alfredo Cantu Gonzalez, a Medal of Honour recipient in the Vietnam War.

Commissioned into the U.S Navy in 1996, the destroyer features an Aegis combat system, the Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS), and several machine guns; however, its most lethal weapons include an array of missiles and torpedoes.

The ship has a 300-member crew and can attain a maximum speed of 30 knots. It is 154 m long and 18 m wide.

Equipped with aerial and surface radar systems and electronic warfare suites, the ship also has a five-inch deck gun, making it a multi-role warship with air defence, anti-submarine warfare, and strike capabilities.

To counter enemy submarines, the warship also has an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter.

The exact area and range of operation have not yet been revealed; however, its current mission would involve defence patrols and escorts.
