Russian drones attacked Ukraine’s largest Danube River port, Izmail, overnight, damaging port infrastructure, the country’s regional development ministry said on Wednesday.

According to the ministry’s statement on social media, the attack hit port facilities and caused fires in warehouses. Emergency teams put out the fires. No casualties were reported.

The ministry said Russian forces continue to target Ukraine’s logistics and port infrastructure.

Izmail is located on the Danube River in the south-west of Ukraine, directly across from Romania. During the war, it has become an important logistics hub and has been hit several times.

In 2022, when Russia blocked Ukraine’s Black Sea ports in the Odesa region, Danube ports like Izmail became one of the main routes for the country’s imports and exports.

After the blockade was lifted in 2023, the importance of these ports reduced. However, Ukraine still depends on the Danube terminals to receive certain cargoes, including fuel and explosives carried by ships.
