"Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some help identifying some fish from Cyprus. My brother was out on a boat trip with some friends in the Greek part of Cyprus today, April 20th, 2026. He filmed a video of these fish, and after seeing it, we are both quite puzzled about what they are.

While I have some knowledge of Vertebrata (Craniata) and scientific nomenclature through contact with researchers, I am definitely not an expert on Cypriot ichthyofauna.

The fish have a silver-grey appearance and, interestingly, they remind me a bit of flatfish (Pleuronectiformes), but they aren't actually flatfish. Instead of staying at the bottom, they stay right at the surface. It almost looks like they are swimming on their backs or sides. They seem to be very common in this area.

We would really appreciate your help using a 'process of elimination' to figure out the family, genus, or even the specific species. I don't want to just guess blindly, so here are a few families/genera that I think could be candidates, but I really need some guidance:

Sparidae (Diplodus or Oblada)

Mullidae (Mullus)

Kyphosidae

Carangidae (Trachinotus)

Pompano (Trachinotus)
