A hostile drone struck an offshore oil drilling platform in Kuwaiti territorial waters on Sunday, injuring one worker and causing material damage, while three northern land border centres were also attacked, Kuwait’s military said.
The incidents took place during a fresh exchange of strikes between Iran and the United States, following heightened tensions over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, Major General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, spokesperson for Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence, said three northern land border centres were hit in what he described as a “criminal aggressive attack.” The attacks caused material damage, but no casualties were reported at the border sites.
The ministry said a hostile drone also targeted an offshore drilling platform operated by Kuwait Oil Company in Kuwaiti territorial waters. The attack damaged the platform and injured one worker, who is receiving medical treatment.
The relevant authorities immediately began responding to the incidents in coordination with other government agencies, the ministry said.
The General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces said it remains fully prepared and has taken all necessary measures to protect the country’s security and territory.
The incidents took place as Iran launched attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Jordan, which Tehran said were in response to repeated U.S. “aggression.”
Earlier, Kuwait said it had intercepted hostile aerial targets after they entered its airspace. Explosions were heard during the interception operations.
The offshore facility targeted in the attack is a Kuwait Oil Company drilling platform located in Kuwaiti territorial waters.
Offshore drilling platforms are important energy assets used for oil production, making their security a key concern in the Gulf, one of the world’s most important oil-producing regions.
Kuwaiti authorities have not identified who carried out the attacks. Investigations are underway, and the armed forces said they remain on high readiness while monitoring the security situation and protecting the country’s border and energy infrastructure.
