california or steller? (WA)
Our take
In a recent stranding call, the submission identifies a marine mammal as a California sea lion, measuring 117 inches in length and found belly-up. The contributor, however, expresses uncertainty regarding the identification due to concerns about size, whisker color, and nose shape. This case highlights the importance of accurate species identification in marine biology, as distinguishing between California sea lions and Steller sea lions can significantly impact conservation efforts. Community input and expertise are crucial in resolving such uncertainties.
hi! this was my first stranding call, and we ended up labeling this as a california sea lion (for some reason everyone took my word for it). 117 inches in length from snout to tail, male, belly-up. i’m only having second thoughts because of the size, whisker color, and nose shape, could someone help me identify? thank you!!
